Kumarakom is the offspring of Vembanad lake that covers an area of 1512 km2 .

it is a water world with its own labyrinth of mud walls in paddy fields. Shrimps, lime shells, tortoises, herons, water fowls, and a number of migratory birds including cranes from distant Siberia etc make the fauna .several rivers flaw in to this lake and make it a fabulous confluence of biodiversity.

You can see the mud turtle driving in to the depth, pearl spots jumping for joy and egrets meditating among water lilies in this heart land of natural beauty of kerala.

Mossy embankments on canals, weedy fields, and emerald forest of paddy and citadels of coconut trees make kumarakom the greenest poetry in the world.
